Warwickshire hopped across the border to take on Leicestershire at Countesthorpe BC. A bit of chaos meant the hosts were several players short so had to draft in some ladies and one rink played a player short. Despite that the Foxes overcame the Bears 118-80.
Vice President Graham O’Donohue, Match Secretary Mike Hall, Wallace Stein (Three Spires) and Bruce Truman (Rugby Railway) scored an early five to lead by seven after eight ends but four ends later the scores were level. Truman and co dominated the remaining ends and even dropping a last end four didn’t stop them winning 23-16. Barry Sheasby (Oakfield), Mark Eden (Southam), Colin Daly (Lillington) and Past President Brian Mace Humphries recovered from a slow start to reach eleven ends all square. With four ends to go Mace Humphries’ rink had edged a shot ahead and a good finish saw them win 16-11.
Clive Radford (Royal Leamington Spa), Simon Packwood (Kings Heath), County Secretary Michael Jackson and Tim Messinger (Wolvey) dropped three singles in the first eleven ends to build an eleven shot advantage. A good spell for the Foxes cut that down to just two with two ends left. The penultimate end was tied and a final dropped single saw Messinger and co sneak the 15-14 win. John Harman, John Brindley (both Wolvey), Assistant Secretary Bob Allcock and Past President Geoff Moran were pitted against a triple so the Foxes would lose 25% of their score at the end. With five ends gone the Bears were 6-0 up. The next eleven ends were taken by the hosts, most with singles to leave Moran’s rink nine down with two ends left. A double and treble saw them losing 11-15 but after the score adjustment it became an eleven all draw.
Mike Hill (Rugby Railway), Michael Allsopp (Wolvey), Paul E Smith (Royal Leamington Spa) and Immediate Past President David Wigman could only pick up a single in the first half of the game, trailing by nine shots. With four ends left the deficit had been reduced to seven but the hosts finished in style to win 27-9. Steve Martin (Executive), Joe Cox (Wolvey), Steve Bird (Avenue Coventry) and Past President Nigel Hewitson were nine shots down after eleven ends. Another strong spell for the Foxes saw them take a 29-6 victory.
