Warwickshire headed to Abingdon BC to take on Berkshire in their latest inter county friendly. A good day for the Bears saw them win five out of six rinks with an overall 102-75 score.
Mick Sharpe (Rugby Railway), Martyn Collier (Rugby), County Secretary Michael Jackson and Past President Nigel Hewitson only scored twice in the first eight ends but were all square at that point. Back to back fives put them in command and a strong finish saw Hewitson’s rink finish with a 26-11 victory. Keith Young, Garry Laffey (both Royal Leamington Spa), Mark Neville (Avon) and Past President Brian Mace Humphries moved ahead with a tenth end four. With three ends to go the scores were all level and Mace Humphries and co finished with a treble, single and double to win 17-11.
Roger Smith (Rugby), Adrian Harris (Solihull Municipal), Tony Mosteckyj (Oakfield) and Assistant Secretary Bob Allcock were a shot ahead midway through but built that up to seven with three ends to go. Berks finished well but couldn’t deny Allcock and co their 15-11 win. Martin Sandwell (Bilton), Mark Sylvester (Snitterfield), Past President Don Darby and David Vowels (Executive) found themselves seven down after twelve ends but rallied to move within one shot with three ends left. Vowels’ rink finished well to steal an 18-14 victory.
Chris Dickens (Little Compton), Ken Orton (Royal Leamington Spa), Michael Allsopp (Wolvey) and Ian Kendall (Rugby) were four up after nine ends but all square with one end to play. Kendall and co took that with a single to win 12-11. Paul Smith (Royal Leamington Spa), John Brindley, Tim Messinger (both Wolvey) and Past President Geoff Moran were level after six ends and sixteen ends. Berkshire finished with a single and double to snatch a 17-14 win.
