Southam played host to the friendly encounter between Warwickshire and Worcestershire, nothing could separate the two sides as both won three rinks and both scored 85 shots.

Lucas Hampson (Bidford), Ray Dawson (Rugby), Trevor Bennett (Snitterfield) and Tom Duggins (Thornfield) and their opponents shared six shots over the first six ends, the Bears just scoring five of them. A brace of doubles, a single and treble took Duggins and co twelve clear after ten ends. A six end spell saw the lead cut down to five with two ends left but a single and treble saw Duggins’ rink win 17-8. Steve Martin (Executive), Ian Maule (Southam), Tony Jones (Caldecott Park) and Martin Sandwell (Bilton) also limited their opponents to one shot in the first six ends but scored nine of their own. With five ends left the Bears led by nine but dropped five over the next two ends, they doubled their lead heading into the final end which went to the visitors, Sandwell and co winning 19-12.

Ken Tredgold (Southam), David Ainsworth (Erdinton Court), Mark Sylvester (Snitterfield) and Assistant Secretary Bob Allcock dropped a third end five to reach the midway point four down. Four ends later that slipped to six but a four, single and treble took them two shots up with two ends left. Both sides scored singles, Allcock’s rink winning 17-15. John Brindley (Wolvey), Russell Pickering (Snitterfield), County Secretary Michael Jackson and Tim Messinger (Wolvey) were six up at the halfway stage but were all square with five ends left. Worcestershire edged the remaining ends to win 13-12.

Mick Sharpe (Rugby Rail), Match Secretary Mike Hall, Denis Ward (Southam) and Bruce Truman (Rugby Rail) were level at the midway point but slipped to seven down with two ends left. A pair or doubles cut the deficit, Truman’s rink losing 17-14. County President Graham O’Donohue, Gary Laffey (Royal Leamington Spa), Rick Hayes (Three Spires) and Dan Hampson (Bidford) had a bad afternoon, limited to four singles and a double, the President’s rink losing 20-6.
