A scorching hot Stoke BC welcomed Berkshire in the latest inter-county friendly. Berkshire proved to be too hot to handle, winning the game 126-104.
Immediate Past President Graham O’Donohue, Match Secretary Mike Hall, Pete Storer (Grange) and Nick Breen (Newbold) were two down after twelve ends but reeled off a single, seven, three fours and a double to race clear, final score 29-11 to Breen and co. Ian Box (Rugby Police), Clive Burbage (Solihull Municipal), President Don Darby and Gary Wilkinson (Grange) got off to a flying start, 18-5 after twelve ends. Berkshire hit a trio of singles but the Bears replied likewise, Berkshire took five in the remaining ends to cut the deficit to 21-13.
Neil Webb (Grange), Chris Howarth (Norgren), Dave Owen (Rugby Police) and Past President Brian Mace Humphries recovered from an early eight shot deficit to reach the midway point all square. The Bears edged ahead only for Berkshire to wipe the deficit and lead by one with two ends left. Mace Humphries’ rink took a four before dropping a last end single to win 20-18. Brian Lindley (Bilton), Geoff Ward (Lillington), Secretary Michael Jackson and Tony Mann (Ambleside) started well but slipped to a six shot deficit after ten ends. That increased to ten but Mann and co finished with four singles to reduce the deficit, final score 23-17 to the visitors.
Nigel Moreton (Highway), Boris Boulstridge (Executive), Tony Stacey (Three Spires) and Nigel Hewitson (Rugby) scored only a double in the opening fourteen ends, trailing by twenty-five. They finished stronger but couldn’t deny the visitors a 30-10 victory. George Morrisons (Kings Heath), Michael Foster (Oakfield), Ian Kendall (Grange) and Senior Vice President Geoff Moran were twenty-three shots down after ten ends, a balanced second half saw the game finish 31-7 to Berkshire.
